The ALY 2017 Class has selected the BAG (Bridging A Gap) Weekend Feeding Program as their community partner for their team project. Haven’t heard of it? Here’s some background info to get you up to speed:

“There are over 22,000 students in 39 schools within the Federal Way School District. According to current data, 66% of the students in the district qualify for the Free and Reduced Feeding program.  Many of these students do not have a reliable source of nutrition during school breaks and over the weekends,” explains BAG Program founder Valerie Danforth.

After learning about weekend food programs for students in other parts of the country, Valerie looked for opportunities to start something similar in Federal Way. With a grant and help from volunteers at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, the BAG Program was launched at Mirror Lake Elementary in 2014. Federal Way Communities in Schools and other community organizations have joined St. Luke’s to help expand the program. The plan is to offer the BAG Program in every school in the district. ALY 2017 is planning an event to advance that goal.

On Saturday, March 25th, 10 am – 1 pm, ALY ’17 will host BAG it Up! at Overcomer Covenant Church. This event will showcase the BAG program, and host several organizations that support the BAG program in a vendor-style setting. There will be food, entertainment by local high school students, and activities for all ages.

“We were beyond excited when we were notified that our program had been selected by ALY,” Valerie said. “Finding organizations who are willing to partner with the individual schools is key to our growth. We are excited about the awareness this event will bring and the potential new partnerships that will be formed.”

Help us spread the word and bring the community out for this event. Together, we can get the problem of youth hunger in the BAG!
